1. Make it a game! –challenge them with a “quiz” on what others were talking about
2. Pay attention to them! They learn by observation
3. Engage in “active listening” which means you repeat back what they say and they repeat back what you say–now you know they heard you!
4. Have them paraphrase what they just heard to make sure they understand–this also reinforces what was just said
5. SPEND TIME!! Being a part of kids lives makes a huge impact. You can teach them and they can teach you.
